KOREC has hosted the first in a series of KOREC Connect events in collaboration with BACH (British Association of Construction Heads) aimed at forging stronger connections between education and the construction industry. The primary goal was to address the pressing skills shortage within the surveying sector and highlight some of the challenges that BACH and BACH members are facing including high dropout rates.
The first event in the series was held on the 10th October in Durham and brought together representatives from further education, local survey companies and industry associations with a common aim – to explore proactive solutions for bridging the skills gap.
The event included a series of informative presentations from Jason Howe (BACH Regional Chair), Katie Holt (CICES) and representatives from KOREC and BuildingPoint UK and Ireland, outlining the latest advancements in cutting-edge digital technologies, which are set to captivate the next generation of tech-savvy, enthusiastic engineers and surveyors sought after by the industry.
Jason Howe spoke about BACH and how it was structured about the members who are mainly Heads, Managers and Leaders of the Built Environment workforce training in FE Colleges and training providers in the UK.
Katie Holt representing both CICES and TSA talked about their initiatives to attract new blood to the industry and the support they provide for schools and colleges.
Sam Hough from KOREC showed some of the past technologies used in survey, then moved onto future trends and some of the innovative technology that can be used to attract a new generation of talent to the industry including mixed and augmented reality, laser scanning and robotics.
Cesar Almeida from KOREC highlighted the vast amount of Trimble resources available on the technology and topics driving change in our fast-paced world. These included Ttimble’s Virtual World, a simulated work site training environment and other practical ‘how to’ guides.
The event was exceptionally well attended with strong participation from both industry professionals and colleges. The afternoon panel discussion, in particular, provided valuable insights and revelations on critical issues:
Colleges and industry found common ground with colleges struggling to find placements for students whilst survey companies actively sought able students for hands-on experience. Colleges urged survey companies to contact them with their requirements which they would seek to fulfil.
Colleges faced a dual problem in both attracting students to courses and retaining them with red tape restricting their visits to schools with a sixth form. Suggestions were made on course content.
Both industry, associations and colleges were unsure who should be responsible for raising awareness of the opportunities within the survey industry. However, it was agreed that a more holistic view to joining up career paths and education would be an excellent starting point with the focus on students of GCSE age and upwards.
Amanda Bradshaw – KOREC Regional Sales Director played a significant role in establishing the new event. She said: “It was wonderful to hear the passion from industry and the dedication to support the promotion of our sector. It was also magnificent to hear how the Colleges are in a prime position to work with employers and develop students to assist their business whether that be with graduate or full-time positions.”
Daniel Rogers – Associate at Ridge and Partners LLP property and construction consultants said: “Ridge were pleased to support KOREC’s first ‘Connect’ initiative in the UK. Bringing together representatives from further education, employers and industry bodies, the key aim of this Northeast event was to look at how we can improve the connection from education to industry. As UK wide multi-disciplinary business, we look forward to working with the industry bodies to build relationships with the colleges and help create an improved pathway to industry for the students. Ridge is passionate about working with individuals developing and supporting them to reach their full potential therefore we look forward to supporting future events.”
KOREC would like to thank BACH, CICES, Costain, Tri-Tech, Academy Geomatics, Gridmark Surveys, Ridge & Partners, Balfour Beatty, 360 Group, Esh Group and all the FE Colleges that joined us on the day.

The introduction of the Trimble MX50 system will play a large part in enabling the Jorvik Design Group to provide a tailored survey and design service. This will maximize efficiency throughout their telecoms build and network deployment process.
About the Trimble MX50
The Trimble MX50 is avehicle-mounted mobile LiDAR system suitable for companies, such as Jorvik Design Group, who wish to expand their offering to include precise, high-volume data capture technology. The system delivers a very accurate point cloud of the environment along with complimentary immersive imagery and will provide Jorvik with the ability to create extremely accurate designs without time consuming and labour-intensive site walkovers.
Enhanced workflow
KOREC has worked closely with Jorvik Design Group in the creation of an enhanced workflow that will enable it to complete design jobs far faster and more accurately through the use of the high-precision, current, 3D point cloud data collected by the MX50. Previously, the company worked from Google StreetView where asset data could be outdated or inaccurate. This older data often required time consuming back-and-forth site visits from surveyors for asset checking purposes before network design could begin.
With the new enhanced workflow, clients provide a boundary map and all relevant UPRNs (Unique Property Reference Numbers) and request that Jorvik plans a design for that network. An initial survey is then driven with the MX50 system mounted on Jorvik’s Land Rover Defender.
QGIS integration
Under the guidance of Jorvik Design Group Network Planner, Mahmoud Ali, the point cloud is then processed and split into smaller jobs for the design team. A KOREC developed portal and plug-in allows the MX50 collected data to be automatically loaded as a layer for immediate use in their QGIS.
This easy integration routine means that the initial design can be viewed on top of the point cloud in a pre-defined layer. The same data can then be worked on all by all Jorvik designers simultaneously.
Client benefits
Having access to a current, high-accuracy, 3D point cloud means that the Jorvik Design Group can now provide an even better service for its clients through the provision of:
Accurate 3D point cloud data for measurements related to costing
A faster design service based on correct asset location
A fully up to date, accurate map of all their assets at the job’s conclusion.
“We invested in the Trimble MX50 system because we are always looking to continually develop and improve our approach to surveying & design and felt that this would allow us to step out amongst the crowd, in an ever growing and rapidly moving sector. KOREC has assisted us in tailoring the MX50 specifically to suit the telecoms market and to specific client requirements, which has been instrumental in our growth as a business.
Charlie Farley, Jorvik Design Group, Director
“By investing in such an advanced piece of hardware, we feel that we are extremely well placed to deliver exceptional data at pace, whilst ensuring that the information captured is up to date. This is critical to our design output and has allowed Jorvik to cover vast areas across the UK in a very short space of time. This system has proven to be invaluable to Jorvik and by using this cutting-edge technology, we feel that we are the market leader in the delivery of surveying and design services within the telecoms sector and keeps us one step ahead of the competition.”
“Mobile Mapping is now a recognised and accepted technology playing an important part in the digital strategy of many major businesses including a number of fibre optic installation companies. Jorvik Design Group is the first in the UK to invest in a Trimble MX50 system and KOREC has been delighted to be a part of that process, from initial trials through to assisting with an enhanced workflow and the delivery of training.”

The Parrot ANAFI is ten times quieter than the average drone which is just one of the reasons why it proved the pefect choice for a recent survey in a residential area with limited access. PDS Surveys Director, Lee Husk, worked hard to ensure that householders were not inconvenienced during this job and was kind enough to share the details with KOREC for our latest case study.

KOREC is delighted to announce that the Drone Pilot Academy, our training partners in the provision of flight training and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) accredited pilot training courses, have successfully launched their Operational Safety Case consultancy service to assist KOREC senseFly eBee users attain EVLOS (Extended Visual Line of Sight) approval. A UK eBee user has already successfully attained this approval through the new Drone Pilot Academy service.
It will now be possible for the users of eBee X, eBee Plus and eBee Classic models in the UK and Northern Ireland to get approval to fly up to 1500m away from the remote pilot (compared to usual 500m) giving a potential operating range of 3km. This will bring a significant competitive advantage to KOREC customers, particularly those surveying quarries, coastal areas and large-scale projects by cutting extensively the need for multiple take-off and landing points.
eBee drone pilots applying for approval will need to submit an Operational Safety Case to the CAA and demonstrate a history of safe flying and an additional person to act as a spotter on site is required.
senseFly’s Christopher Thomson (Regional Manger EMEAI) said, “Seeing the eBee X being able to fulfil its true potential is hugely exciting. The UK is always on the forefront of pushing the advancements in UAV technology and the EVLOS permission across all of our platforms attests to this. This will now enable over 200 senseFly users to push the boundaries of their mapping capabilities”
Drone Pilot Academy’s Jim Ixer (Managing Director) said, “With the number of large scale mapping projects our clients are routinely involved with at the moment, and the number in the pipeline we wanted to offer a service that allows eBee operators to maximise the impressive flight endurance with the latest battery advancements. With a standard CAA permission, the limiting factor is the regulations, not the drone, so we sought to safely resolve that issue. Now we can offer a consultancy service that includes bespoke training to assist senseFly drone operators to attain the EVLOS accreditation from the CAA”
KOREC’s Richard Gauchwin (Business Area Manager – Mapping & GIS) said, “This really is a game changer for the UAV market in the UK. Being able to fly larger sites and now only requiring one take-off and landing point has huge benefits in terms of efficiencies the system can bring to businesses. The eBee X, with its flight time of up to 90 minutes, has always been capable of undertaking these larger surveys, but has been limited by the legislation governing maximum flight distance from the pilot; now it can realise its full potential.”
