The course is designed to provide a general introduction to the process of topographic (land) surveying using a total station. As total stations have become easier to use, so non-specialist survey staff (archaeologists, architects, GIS staff, etc..) are using them on an increasingly regular basis. This course is therefore aimed at those whose primary role is not surveying, but who from time to time are required to complete surveys.
The course begins by introducing the total station, what is measured and how this fits within a coordinate system. Some surveying concepts and theory are introduced, including field coding. The subject of traversing (the process of precisely measuring new control stations) is discussed but is not practised during this course. However this is something that can be added by arrangement.
Field practice covers various stationing methods and survey of a small area, picking up a variety of detail and coding appropriately. The survey data are downloaded and processed in the office to produce a plan drawing, ready for printing or export to CAD.
Trimble robotic total stations are used on this course. Trimble Business Center is used as the office processing software.
