GNSS Survey & Data Processing Course

Prev Next

This 3 day course provides a good overview in the operation of GPS/GNSS survey equipment for the general user.  GNSS equipment is on the whole very easy to use, but care must be taken to understand how it works and whether what is being delivered is valid.

The main focus of the course is the establishment of a control network using FastStatic GNSS survey and the related baseline processing and network adjustment that goes along with this process.  However the course also covers configuration and use of GNSS survey equipment for topographic survey and setting out tasks.  The primary processing software used on the course is Trimble Business Center.

Day 1 provides an introduction to GNSS, the different survey types possible and how to configure a Controller to use each type. After reviewing some network design principles a small control network is observed using the FastStatic method.  Following this a topographic survey is performed.

On day 2 Trimble Business Center is introduced and used to import survey data from day 1. Following a review of baseline processing theory the FastStatic data from day 1 is processed. Techniques for data troubleshooting are reviewed and practiced. Following a review of least squares adjustment and the adjustment process, the surveyed control network is adjusted.

On day 3, the OS Active Station network is introduced and incorporated into the data processing in order to place the local network into an OS National Grid framework.  The site calibration process is reviewed for the use of GNSS data in local grids and how OS data can be scaled to 1. The fieldwork is rounded off with some practice of common stake out operations, e.g. points, lines, DTMs.

Objectives:
Those completing these modules/Course will be able to:

  • Survey a control network using a FastStatic method
  • Survey and stake out using GNSS equipment
  • Import, process and troubleshoot raw GNSS data (baseline processing)
  • Understand the principles behind least squares adjustment
  • Perform a network adjustment
  • Set up and operate Base & Rover and VRS equipment
  • Perform a site calibration that can be used in Trimble Access or SCS900
  • Use Trimble Business Center to process and manipulate GNSS survey data
  • Transfer data to third party software or Trimble device

Ideal for:
Novices or those with some experience of surveying with GNSS equipment.
