Buckingham Group Adopt Trimble 3D Machine Control for Rail Project

The West Coast Main Line between Tamworth and Armitage with Handsacre is currently two tracks, creating a bottleneck for trains over a 12 mile stretch. The TV4 Project aims to double the number of tracks from two to four to remove this bottleneck. High-speed traffic will be segregated from local passenger trains and freight, aided by the laying of 38km of new track.

The Buckingham Group has a long standing relationship with KOREC, and also with Sinbad Plant Ltd, an independent plant provider at the forefront of machine control and with many years experience working in the rail industry. Following an analysis of the TV4 job requirements with both these parties, Buckingham decided that the introduction of machine control technology could provide a worthwhile increase in productivity and performance on the TV4 project. They therefore hired Trimble's flagship GCS900 3D Machine Control System on a D5N Caterpillar Dozer from Sinbad.  The system included dual Trimble MS990 integrated GPS receivers and antenna and a CB430 Control Box for the cab.

This would be the first time a fully interactive GPS machine control system would be used on a rail project in the UK to grade ballast.
