Those nice people at Ordnance Survey and the ICE have launched a new map to recognise the contribution that civil engineers have made to the development of the Olympic Park. Originally created for distribution to ICE members and as an educational resource the original print run has already proved so popular that they have run-out! Helpfully the OS have provided a pdf version for download on their Blog and are already looking at producing a high-res version for those of you that want to print your own full-size map to use as a handy table cloth or as some extra… Read More

The latest model of the Trimble Juno series, the SD now comes with a phone built in. However changes to the software to accomodate this means there have been changes made to the way the unit connects to the internet. For connections in the UK: When creating the connection, please use INTERNET as the number(!) to dial, and then on the following screen use WAP for both the username and password. N.B. This is for Vodaphone SIM cards only, as that is what we supply, if you are planning to use another companies SIM card, please contact support for the… Read More

Improving your GPS survey data by adding photos to surveyed data using the Trimble Geo Explorer series used to be limited to a cameras which had a WiFi mode. Finding a camera with WiFi modes used to be very tricky, as there were very few models which had this functionality, it wasn’t a mainstream hit. However with the introduction of the Eye-Fi SD card this means lots of models from many different companies are capable of WiFi (see http://uk.eye.fi/how-it-works/camera-compatibility for full list). Eye-Fi is a modified SD card which not only stores photos but has WiFi capability to send pictures… Read More

Halfway through the second day of Trimble Dimensions 2010 in Las Vegas and the KOREC delegation are still standing. We arrived in Vegas on Saturday, a small group made up of KOREC staff and customers looking forward to a three day conference with a bit of sight-seeing thrown in for good measure. The theme for Trimble Dimensions this year is Converge. Connect. Collaborate. Trimble’s President & CEO Steve Berglund opened the conference on Monday using his Keynote address to discuss how organisations can use technology and innovation to create and enable collaboration and that with “intelligent use of information they… Read More

Anyone who uses Trimble office software to process GPS data relies (even though they may not know it) on the antenna.ini file stored on their PC to allow TGO, TBC, etc to recognise the antennae that were used to receive the data during the survey. Without this file it becomes necessary to enter all of the antenna phase centre offset information, and other antenna specific data, by hand in the software. Much easier to let the computer do it for you! As improvements are made in antenna technology new models are brought out by the numerous manufacturers making it important… Read More

As we sit here in Liverpool listening to the rain beating down (incessantly for the last four hours!) the mind turns to those poor surveyors who are going to spend the next six months huddled behind a tripod in all weathers counting down the minutes until they can climb into the van, turn on the heater and head home. Having been there ourselves during our varied careers we can sympathise with this but a key member of the team that sometimes gets overlooked, and must not be forgotten, in the rush to dry out and get warm is the equipment!… Read More
